WooCommerce Hosting: How to Choose the Right Hosting for Your Store

What hosting a WooCommerce store needs: PHP, RAM, caching, server location, backups and support. When shared hosting isn't enough and when to move to a VPS.

Hosting is the foundation of your store. You can have the best design, but if the server is slow, checkout will take 5 seconds to load and customers will leave. WooCommerce is more demanding than a regular site because the cart, orders and filters can't be fully cached.

In short: Look for PHP 8.2+, enough RAM, server-side caching (LiteSpeed, Redis), SSD/NVMe storage, a server in Europe, daily backups and fast support. The cheapest hosting almost always ends up the most expensive.

What to check when choosing hosting

Minimum requirements for WooCommerce

PHP version8.2 or newer
Memory (PHP memory limit)at least 256 MB
StorageSSD / NVMe
CachingLiteSpeed, Redis or Memcached
Serverclose to your customers
Backupsdaily, off-site

Types of hosting

Shared hosting

Many sites share one server. Cheap and easy, suitable for small stores with moderate traffic. The risk: if a "neighbouring" site overloads the server, yours slows down too.

Managed WordPress hosting

A server optimised specifically for WordPress and WooCommerce, with built-in caching, automatic backups and a staging environment. A good balance for most growing stores.

VPS / cloud server

Dedicated resources and full control. Suitable for large stores with thousands of products or many orders – like Metamix with 10,000+ products. Requires technical management.

Warning signs your hosting isn't enough

  • A slow admin panel and slow product saves.
  • Cart and checkout take more than 2–3 seconds to load.
  • 500 or 503 errors during sales and traffic spikes.
  • Your host emails you about "exceeded resources".
  • Support takes days to reply.

Don't forget

  • SSL certificate – mandatory for every store (usually free with Let's Encrypt).
  • CDN and protection – Cloudflare in front of the site speeds up static files and blocks many attacks.
  • Email – order emails must be sent reliably (SMTP), or they'll land in spam.

💡 From practice: Switching hosts is often the quickest speed win. But if the theme and plugins are heavy, a bigger server only hides the problem – see 10 reasons your WooCommerce store is slow.

Frequently asked questions

Is shared hosting enough for an online store?
For a small store with moderate traffic, often yes – if it’s quality hosting with LiteSpeed or similar caching and enough resources. With hundreds of orders a day, thousands of products or a slow checkout, it’s time for managed WordPress hosting or a VPS.
Where should the server be?
Close to your customers. For a store selling in Bulgaria or the EU – in Central or Western Europe. A server in the US adds latency to every request.
Do I need a CDN?
It helps, especially if you sell abroad. A CDN like Cloudflare caches static files closer to visitors and adds attack protection.
How much does good WooCommerce hosting cost?
Prices vary widely – from a few euro a month for shared hosting to tens of euro for managed WordPress hosting or a VPS. What matters is price/performance and support quality, not the lowest price.
