Running an Online Store in Bulgaria After the Euro: 2026 Checklist

Dual pricing in Bulgaria ended on 8 August 2026. A WooCommerce checklist: currency, prices, product feeds, emails, invoices and the ban on price increases.

Bulgaria joined the eurozone on 1 January 2026, and mandatory dual pricing in leva and euro ended on 8 August 2026. Many online stores made the switch in a hurry – with a dual-price plugin and manual fixes. Now is the time to make sure everything has been cleaned up properly.

In short: The payable price must now be in euro only. The lev price may stay for information. Check not just product pages but also the cart, emails, invoices, feeds and banners.

Key dates and rules

The euro in Bulgaria – key dates

Fixed rate1 € = 1.95583 BGN
Dual pricing starts8 August 2025
Euro becomes official currency1 January 2026
Dual pricing ends8 August 2026
Ban on unjustified price increasesuntil 9 August 2027

Rounding rule: divide the lev amount by the full rate 1.95583 and round to two decimals. Example: 1.70 BGN ÷ 1.95583 = 0.869 → €0.87.

WooCommerce store checklist

1. Store base currency

In WooCommerce → Settings → General the currency must be Euro (€) with 2 decimals. Also check the symbol position and separators.

2. Product and variation prices

If prices were converted automatically, you probably have awkward prices like €25.56 or €50.62. Consider rounding them to cleaner values – but be careful with increases. Rounding down is safe; rounding up must be justified.

3. The dual-price plugin

If you used a plugin to show prices in leva and euro, decide whether to disable it or keep the lev price for information. If you keep it, it must be visibly secondary. Unnecessary plugins only slow the site down.

4. Cart, checkout and emails

Place a test order and check the cart totals, shipping cost, confirmation email and thank-you page. Email templates often contain hard-coded lev text.

5. Shipping and cash on delivery

Check your Econt and Speedy plugins: rates, the free-shipping threshold and the COD amount must all be in euro. A "free shipping over 100 BGN" threshold is now €51.13 – most stores round it to €50.

6. Invoices and accounting plugins

Invoice plugins must issue documents in euro. If you're connected to accounting software or an ERP, check that the currency is passed correctly.

7. Product feeds

Feeds for Google Merchant Center, the Facebook catalogue and comparison sites are often generated separately and may still send leva. The wrong currency means rejected products and paused ads.

8. Copy, banners and legal pages

Search your site for "лв." and "BGN": promo banners, shipping pages, terms, FAQs, pop-ups. Update them to euro.

9. Structured data and SEO

If products have schema markup, priceCurrency must be EUR. Otherwise Google may show the wrong price in search results.

Watch out: the ban on unjustified price increases

From 9 August 2026 to 9 August 2027, unjustified price increases are banned. Traders must be able to prove that an increase is economically justified (for example, higher supplier costs). It's enforced by the Consumer Protection Commission, and fines for companies are substantial. Keep records of your price changes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need to show prices in leva?
No. Mandatory dual pricing ended on 8 August 2026. You may keep the lev price for information only, but the payable price must clearly be in euro. If you show it, use the fixed rate 1 € = 1.95583 BGN.
How are prices rounded when converting?
The lev amount is divided by 1.95583 (the full rate, unrounded) and the result is rounded to two decimal places – up if the third decimal is 5 or more.
Can I raise prices after switching to the euro?
Yes, but only with an economic justification. From 9 August 2026 to 9 August 2027, unjustified price increases are banned and the trader must be able to prove the reason. Violations are sanctioned by the Consumer Protection Commission (KZP).
What about product feeds for Google Shopping and comparison sites?
Check them. Feeds are often generated by a separate plugin with its own settings and may still send prices in leva or the wrong currency, which can get products rejected.
