Product Page SEO: A 12-Point Checklist for WooCommerce

12 things every WooCommerce product page needs to rank in Google: title, description, images, schema, reviews, speed and internal links.

Product pages are the ones that actually sell, yet in most stores they're the least optimised: a one-line description copied from the manufacturer and an image with no name. Here's a 12-point checklist to run every product through.

In short: A unique title and description, optimised images, structured data (Product schema), reviews, fast loading and internal links. Start with the products that make the most money.

The checklist

1. SEO title

Around 60 characters, with the keyword first: "Wooden Wave Wall Panel 60×40 cm | Store Name". Every product gets a unique title.

2. Meta description

Around 155 characters – the benefit plus a reason to click: shipping, warranty, availability. It doesn't affect rankings directly, but it affects clicks.

3. Clean URL

/product/wooden-wave-panel/ instead of /?p=1234. Short, descriptive, no filler words.

4. A unique description

Write for the customer: what it's for, what it's made of, how to care for it, who it suits. Manufacturer copy appears on dozens of sites – Google has no reason to prefer yours.

5. A specifications table

Dimensions, weight, material, colour, warranty. Use WooCommerce attributes – they help both filters and structured data.

6. Optimised images

WebP format, correct sizes, a descriptive file name (wooden-wave-panel.webp) and alt text that describes the image. Several angles and an "in use" shot increase sales.

7. Structured data (Product schema)

Price, currency, availability, brand, rating. This lets Google show price and stars directly in results. Check it with Google's Rich Results Test.

8. Customer reviews

Genuine reviews bring trust, fresh unique text and stars in Google. Send an automatic review request a few days after delivery.

9. Page speed

Product pages must load fast on mobile. See 10 reasons your WooCommerce store is slow.

10. Internal links

Breadcrumbs (Home › Category › Product), related products, a link to the category and to useful blog articles.

11. Shipping and returns info

Shipping price and time, free-shipping threshold, the 14-day return right – right on the page. It answers questions before they turn into abandoned carts.

12. Variations and canonicals

Colours and sizes should be variations of one product, not separate near-identical pages. If duplicates exist, set a canonical to the main one.

Where to start

Don't optimise 1,000 products at once. Take your 20 best sellers or the products with the most impressions in Search Console and run through the checklist. Then move on to categories, which matter just as much for SEO.

💡 From practice: For stores with thousands of products like Metamix, the product page template is key – auto-generated titles, schema and specifications optimise every product at once, leaving manual work for the top sellers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I copy the manufacturer’s description?
You can, but it’s a bad idea. The same text appears on dozens of other stores and Google has no reason to show yours. Even a short but unique description with your expertise and answers to buyer questions works better.
How long should a product description be?
There’s no magic number. It should answer the buyer’s questions – dimensions, materials, use, shipping, returns. For most products that’s 150–400 words plus a specifications table.
What should I do with out-of-stock products?
If the product will return, keep the page with "Out of stock" and a notify-me option. If it’s discontinued, 301-redirect to the closest product or category.
Do I need an SEO plugin?
A plugin like Rank Math or Yoast makes titles, descriptions and sitemaps easier, but it doesn’t do the work for you. Content, speed and structure matter more than the plugin.
