Google Merchant Center: How to Get Your Products into Google Shopping for Free

Step by step: how to connect your WooCommerce store to Google Merchant Center and show your products for free in Google's Shopping tab.

Jordan Andreev 7 min read

When someone searches for a product on Google, they often see cards with an image, a price and a store name. Many store owners don't know they can appear there for free – with no ad budget. All you need is Google Merchant Center and a correctly submitted product feed.

In short: Create a Merchant Center account, verify your site, connect WooCommerce (e.g. with the Google for WooCommerce plugin), set up shipping and returns, and wait for product approval.

What you get

  • Your products in Google's Shopping tab.
  • Eligibility to appear in Google Images and search results.
  • A foundation for paid Shopping campaigns later – with the same feed.

Step by step

  1. Merchant Center account. Sign in with your business Google account and fill in your company details.
  2. Verify the site. Easiest via Google Search Console or the WooCommerce plugin.
  3. Connect the store. Install Google for WooCommerce or a product feed plugin. Products sync automatically.
  4. Shipping and returns. Set shipping prices, times and your return policy – without them products may be disapproved.
  5. Enable free listings. Make sure products are opted in to free listings.
  6. Monitor diagnostics. Fix warnings and disapproved products.

Checklist for an approved feed

Required

Price and currencymatch the site
Availabilityup to date
Imagesno text or watermarks
Brand and GTIN (barcode)if the product has one
Shipping and returnsfilled in
Contact info and terms on the sitevisible

If you recently switched prices from leva to euro, check the feed specifically – see the online store after the euro checklist.

How to stand out

  • Clear titles: brand + product + key attribute (size, colour, material).
  • Quality images on a white or neutral background as the main image.
  • Free or fast shipping – Google shows it as a highlight.
  • Reviews – stars increase clicks.

💡 From practice: Merchant Center and product page SEO work together. Strong titles, descriptions and structured data help free listings too – see the product page SEO checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?
Yes. Free product listings in the Shopping tab and elsewhere on Google don’t require ads. Only advertising campaigns (Shopping/Performance Max) cost money, if you choose to run them.
Why are my products disapproved?
The most common reasons: price or availability on the site doesn’t match the feed; wrong currency; missing shipping or return info; images with text or watermarks; missing identifiers (GTIN/brand).
Do I need a plugin?
The Google for WooCommerce plugin connects the store directly to Merchant Center and syncs products automatically. Alternatively, product feed plugins generate an XML file.
How long does approval take?
Product review usually takes from a few days to about a week after the first sync. Issues appear in the diagnostics section of Merchant Center.
